After several weeks of hot and dry, we got a few quick passing storms and a long time ago fallen pine tree trunks in the valley next to our house, showed their real beauty in the late afternoon soft light. I wondered around and enjoyed the texture, form, and shape.
When I continued to revisit, observing and photographing my fallen pine tree trunks in that area, I created a kind of relationship, deep feelings, and remembrance to their circle of life. When a tree dies, its “life” doesn’t. Insects move in, providing food and nesting sites for birds, then the tree will slowly decompose, providing nutrients for new plants.
I photographed these transforming tree trunks with great love, capturing their texture, form, and shape, adding grace and respect to the fallen past. I photographed these images with my large format film camera and had a great time in my darkroom to develop and evaluate my large format 4×5 sheet films.
