“My Inner Peace and Happiness” by Laszlo Perlaky

At Tuesday’s September meeting members were entranced with an outstanding photographer as our night’s speaker.  Laszlo Perlaky was entertaining and informative as he talked about his photo journey from a boy in Hungary saving his money for his first camera to his current love of large format nature photography.  In his journey he talked about why nature, why photography, why large format, why black and white!  From early on he was frustrated with the equipment, modifying it with self-made extension tubes and lenses, because it did not tell the story that he envisioned in his mind.  After coming to this country he focused on his portfolios but never satisfied with what he was capturing.   Eventually, this dissatisfaction led him to consider large format photography and his first one was a gift from his wife.

As he stated, “I didn’t know at the time that this fine instrument would completely change my vision”.   He is now happy as he waits for the light to become the scene that he pre-visualized, for the image to work with his storyboard and with the camera’s dark cloth separating him for outside distractions it clears his mind and opens his heart to really see the image.   For us with digital cameras we are not concerned with the number of photos (except when we need to start processing them), for Laszlo he will only take four photos, sometimes hiking 15 miles with his tripod and camera.  As he talked I took photos of his slide show so members that missed could get a flavor for the talk we enjoyed.  Displaying several of his photos you could see the fine detail he captures.
